I despise the Mandela Effect conspiracy theory. Basically, the Mandela Effect is a name for collective false memories. For example, numerous people falsely remember that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the eighties, while he actually lived until 2013. Conspiracy theorists cite this phenomenon as evidence of an alternate universe, or time travel. I think what really grinds my gears is the hubris inherent in such an assumption. Oh, me and some other people misremember the “Berenstain Bears” as the “Berenstein Bears” so there MUST be a whole other reality.* Or better yet, someone MUST have gone back in time to change their name! First of all, do you really think time travel was invented and the first priority was to change a single vowel in a children’s book series? No one was like, hmmm, maybe we should focus on halting the invention of capitalism first?? Okay, that’s a stretch- whoever invented time travel in this fake scenario is probably rich as fuck and loves capitalism. Nevertheless, they had to have had a more important agenda than changing an “e” to and “a.” This conspiracy theory sullies the name of the great Nelson Mandela. In short, if you believe in the Mandela Effect you are self-absorbed and I don’t like you.**
*I don’t even disagree with the notion that there might be an alternate universe, but it’s not because you and your nerd bros are really so 100% sure Darth Vader added a “Luke” in there.
**Okay, I probably still like you but I am judging you.
